SAVANNAH, GA – A Fort Stewart soldier was killed in a car crash on Saturday evening, with another soldier arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence, authorities said.
The collision occurred at approximately 9:15 p.m. on Highway 17, just north of the Ogeechee River. A preliminary investigation revealed that two vehicles were involved: a sedan and a pickup truck. The deceased, identified as Private First Class John Doe, 22, was pronounced dead at the scene. The second soldier, who was driving the pickup, sustained minor injuries and was taken into custody.
Emergency responders from the Chatham County Fire Department and local police arrived shortly after the incident, providing medical aid and facilitating traffic control. Northbound lanes of Highway 17 were closed for several hours during the investigation and cleanup efforts.
Authorities are conducting a thorough investigation into the circumstances leading to the crash. Witnesses reported seeing the pickup weaving between lanes prior to the collision. Charges against the second soldier are pending as the investigation continues.
