MassDOT Expands Wrong-Way Driving Detection Systems Statewide

BOSTON, MA—As of Monday, the Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) has installed approximately 90 wrong-way driving detection systems across the state since June, with plans for an additional 40 by year-end.

This initiative follows a series of wrong-way crashes, including a May incident that resulted in the deaths of Massachusetts State Police Trooper Kevin Trainor and a wrong-way driver on Route 1 in Lynnfield. Most recently, a Triton Regional High School senior was killed in a wrong-way collision on Route 1 in Revere.

The enhanced systems feature advanced detection technology, improved signage, and infrastructure upgrades at over 800 locations in Massachusetts. According to Highway Administrator Jonathan Gulliver, district leaders evaluated interchanges to determine optimal placement for the detection systems.

MassDOT aims to install over 300 systems statewide by the end of 2027, including 12 portable systems for rapid deployment in unforeseen issues. Since June, the systems have detected 215 wrong-way drivers, with 140 self-correcting upon receiving alerts. Currently, drivers are notified by flashing signs, with future plans for direct alerts to vehicle dashboard systems or navigation apps.

“Wrong-way driving is one of those dangers where seconds can mean the difference between life and death,” said Mass. State Police Lt. Brendhan Shugrue.
