WORCESTER, Mass. — Worcester City Councilor Kathleen Toomey temporarily stepped down from the Public Safety Committee following a car crash on Sept. 2.
Police released body camera footage of their response to the incident. Toomey stated the other vehicle was “unlawfully parked” and unoccupied.
The Worcester Police Department is conducting an internal investigation to assess if Toomey received any preferential treatment due to her position.
In a statement, Toomey emphasized her cooperation with law enforcement, confirming she was not impaired and will face no charges.
Toomey remarked, “To avoid any potential appearance of a conflict, I have decided to temporarily step down from the Public Safety Committee and recuse myself from any matter involving the Worcester Police Department until the investigation is over.”
Worcester Mayor Joseph Petty expressed his support for Toomey's decision, stating it reflects her commitment to the city's institutions. Vice Chair Morris A. Bergman will handle the committee's responsibilities during this period.
