Interstate 76 Reopens After Rollover Crash Involving Semitrailer in Northeast Colorado
Interstate 76 reopened Tuesday morning after a rollover crash involving a semitrailer hauling cattle closed the highway for over six hours.
The incident occurred around 2:58 a.m. when the semitrailer, traveling west on I-76, entered the median, rolled over, and spilled its cargo. Three additional semitrailers and one car subsequently struck the cattle ejected from the truck, according to the Colorado State Patrol.
Of the 48 cattle being transported, 10 were confirmed dead, 29 survived, and nine remain missing, officials reported. The driver of the semitrailer was taken to the hospital, but details on their injuries have not been disclosed.
By 9:30 a.m., both directions of I-76 were reopened between Hillrose and Merino, approximately 11 miles east of Brush, per the Colorado Department of Transportation. Lane closures on westbound I-76 between Merino and Colorado 63, along with eastbound I-76 between U.S. 6 and Hillrose, were also lifted.
Authorities have not released additional information regarding the cause of the crash.
