BRUSH, Colo. — I-76 east of Brush was closed in both directions early Tuesday morning following a crash involving a cattle trailer.
The incident occurred just before 3 a.m., according to the Colorado State Patrol. A trailer transporting cattle was headed westbound on I-76 when it veered into the center median and rolled over, spilling its cargo onto the roadway.
Officials reported that three additional semis and one passenger vehicle collided with some of the escaped cattle. The driver of the cattle trailer was transported to the hospital; the extent of injuries remains unclear.
A total of 48 cattle were on the trailer at the time of the crash. Authorities confirmed 10 cattle were found dead, while 29 are alive, and nine remain unaccounted for as of 8 a.m. Tuesday.
The Colorado State Patrol indicated that the closure of the freeway is expected to last for an extensive duration. The timeline for reopening the road has not been provided.
