Two Dead in Wrong-Way Collision on I-70 Near Rifle, Colorado
Two individuals died early Sunday in a wrong-way collision involving two cars and a semitrailer on Interstate 70 in western Colorado, according to Colorado State Patrol officials.
Troopers responded to the incident shortly after 2:30 a.m. at mile marker 93 on westbound I-70. A 17-year-old boy, driving a 2022 Subaru, was reportedly traveling east in the westbound lanes when he collided head-on with a 2004 GMC Yukon. The impact caused the Yukon, driven by an 18-year-old woman, to subsequently strike a Peterbilt semitrailer in an adjacent lane.
Both drivers were pronounced dead at the scene. Their identities will be released by the Garfield County Coroner's Office. The semitrailer driver was not injured, authorities said.
The Colorado State Patrol confirmed that an investigation into the crash is ongoing.
Authorities remain on scene managing traffic and determining the cause of the accident.
