MORONI, Utah (KUTV) — A mother and her newborn baby died following a vehicle collision on Tuesday morning near 1808 E. Dairy Lane.
The crash occurred at approximately 7:55 a.m., according to the Utah Highway Patrol (UHP). Authorities said Rebecca Hafen, who was pregnant, was walking on the road's shoulder when struck by a vehicle. She was transported to a hospital, where she succumbed to her injuries later that day.
Medical personnel conducted an emergency delivery after the incident. The newborn was also hospitalized and received treatment in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). However, an update from a GoFundMe campaign indicates that the baby did not survive.
Witnesses reported that family members had the opportunity to spend time with the newborn before his passing. The GoFundMe campaign is raising funds to assist Hafen's husband, Tyson Hafen, and their children during this tragic period.
UHP confirmed that charges against the driver are not anticipated unless speed is determined to be a contributing factor. The Sanpete County Attorney's Office will assess potential charges.
The GoFundMe initiative aims to support the family with medical expenses, recovery needs, and children's care as they navigate this loss.
