STAFFORD COUNTY, Va. — A bus crash on Interstate 95 south early Friday morning resulted in five fatalities and numerous injuries.
Authorities reported that traffic was slowing due to a work zone when the bus struck a Chevrolet SUV, causing a chain reaction involving an Acura SUV and additional vehicles. Dong sustained injuries in the incident.
In total, 44 individuals were transported to local hospitals in Fredericksburg and Stafford, with three patients listed in critical condition. According to Mary Washington Healthcare, 19 patients were treated; seven were taken to the trauma center, while twelve were discharged in good condition from their Stafford facility.
“This is one of the most tragic things I've ever seen,” said Peyton Vogel, a spokesperson for the Federal Transit Administration. “We've got patients in multiple hospitals.”
The National Transportation Safety Board has dispatched a “go-team” to conduct an investigation into the crash. Virginia State Police confirmed that the I-95 southbound lanes were closed for over four hours, reopening at noon, although residual traffic congestion continued.
As investigations proceed, details about charges against the bus driver remain pending.
