GEORGETOWN — A Conway man was killed in a boat crash on the Sampit River on May 23, authorities said.

Wendell “Jay” Holbert III, 49, succumbed to injuries sustained in a collision between two boats, according to Georgetown County Coroner Chase Ridgeway. The crash occurred in the morning, though specific details remain limited as the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources (SCDNR) investigates.

Authorities indicated that the investigation is in its early stages, which accounts for the lack of information released. No additional details regarding other injuries or the condition of the second vessel have been provided.

Conway City Councilman Justin Jordan posted on social media, describing Holbert as “one of the kindest and most genuine guys I've ever known.” He added that Holbert was a valuable member of the community, leaving behind a family and many friends.

The SCDNR continues to gather information related to the incident. Further updates will follow as more details emerge.
