CARTER COUNTY, Tenn. (WCYB) — Two people are dead and several others injured following a vehicle collision with a group of cyclists on Wednesday morning on US Highway 19E at Simerly Creek.
According to Carter County Sheriff Mike Fraley, victims have been transported from the scene, and at least one individual is being flown to Johnson City Medical Center. Emergency crews and law enforcement are on-site, and authorities advise drivers to avoid the area.
District Attorney Steve Finney confirmed that 69-year-old John Benfield of North Carolina has been charged with two counts of vehicle homicide by recklessness and five counts of aggravated assault by vehicle. He is currently booked in the Carter County Detention Center, and additional charges may follow.
Milligan University has identified the deceased victims as sophomores Haylan Engdahl and Brayden Rodgers. The university expresses its condolences and requests prayers for the injured cyclists, several of whom remain in serious condition.
Ballad Health reported that two patients are stable, while four others are receiving treatment in the surgical intensive care unit. Trauma surgeons are prepared to respond to additional needs as the situation evolves.
