ELIZABETHTOWN, Ky. (LEX NEWS) — A two-vehicle crash on Interstate 65 resulted in a dramatic rescue by a Kentucky State Police (KSP) trooper Friday afternoon.
At approximately 2:10 p.m., KSP responded to an overturned vehicle on I-65 in Hardin County after receiving a report of the car smoking.
Trooper Blaine Miller, who was nearby responding to a separate incident, arrived to find the overturned 2013 Honda CRV engulfed in smoke. Authorities said he broke the windshield, climbed inside, and successfully rescued all four occupants.
The individuals rescued were identified as Samantha Bloom, 28, Joshua Bloom, 22, Sarah Bloom, 26, and Savannah Bloom, 24, all from Louisville, Ky. KSP reported that none of the occupants sustained serious injuries and were subsequently transported to a local hospital for treatment before being released.
According to the preliminary investigation, a tractor-trailer driven by Steven Hawkins, 29, of Munfordville, Ky., was traveling southbound when it merged from the middle lane into the right lane near the 87-mile marker. This forced the CRV off the right shoulder, leading to its overturning multiple times.
Authorities confirmed that Hawkins did not require medical attention and declined EMS services. The incident is under investigation, and further details will be provided as they become available.
