LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The National Transportation Safety Board is investigating a fatal MD-11 crash that prompted the FAA, UPS, and FedEx to ground all MD-11 aircraft on Saturday.
UPS announced the grounding of all MD-11 planes “effective immediately,” citing recommendations from the aircraft manufacturer. Boeing emphasized that safety is the top priority, advising the operators to pause flight operations for additional engineering analyses.
Following the crash, the FAA issued an emergency airworthiness directive requiring inspections and corrective actions for all MD-11 and MD-11 F aircraft before they can resume flight.
At Louisville Muhammad Ali International Airport, operations have stabilized, with 10 flight cancellations reported on Friday and six on Saturday.
Passengers have mixed feelings about flying. Adam Leibler shared, “I try to keep that out of my mind and just keep positive thoughts,” while Sherry Peters expressed concern, saying, “My heart goes out to those affected.”
Grade Lane remains closed as essential workers continue debris removal and power line repairs. The Okolona Fire Department is coordinating with LMPD to inform local businesses about re-entry timelines. UPS advises families seeking information about injured individuals to contact 800-631-0604.
