Fatal Five-Vehicle Crash Near Milton Under Investigation
Milton, DE – Delaware State Police are investigating a fatal five-vehicle crash that occurred on Nov. 7 at approximately 2:30 p.m. on Route 1.
Authorities reported that a Ford Edge, Nissan Altima, BMW X2, and BMW 135 were traveling southbound in the right lane near Hudson Road, either slowing or stopped for traffic. A Peterbilt dump truck approached from behind and failed to stop in time, striking the rear of the Ford and initiating a chain-reaction collision.
A 62-year-old woman from Bel Air, MD, the driver of the Ford, was transported to a nearby hospital, where she later died. A passenger in the Ford, a 64-year-old man, was pronounced dead at the scene. Their identities are being withheld pending family notification.
The driver of the Nissan, a 57-year-old man from Millsboro, suffered non-life-threatening injuries and was taken to a hospital. The BMW X2 driver, a 75-year-old woman from Milton, also sustained non-life-threatening injuries. The 27-year-old Peterbilt driver from Wilmington was similarly hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries. The driver of the BMW 135, a 74-year-old man from Lewes, was not injured.
Route 1 was closed for approximately five hours as authorities investigated and cleared the scene. The Delaware State Police Troop 7 Collision Reconstruction Unit continues to investigate.
