MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Md. (WBFF) — A fatal crash involving a stolen vehicle driven by juveniles occurred Tuesday in Germantown, resulting in one death.
Montgomery County Police reported that seven children, aged 12 to 15, were in a stolen sedan when it collided with another vehicle, claiming the life of 58-year-old Vance Payne, who was en route to work at the time.
Authorities said Payne's family is mourning, requesting privacy as they process their loss. In a statement, they described him as a “devoted father, husband, and friend.”
The incident has reignited discussions about juvenile crime in Maryland. Delegate Kathy Szeliga, R-Baltimore County, is urging state leaders to initiate a public campaign against car theft by juveniles. “This behavior has to stop,” she said, calling for accountability measures.
This crash is one of several high-profile incidents involving juveniles and stolen vehicles. In June, a 14-year-old struck and killed a three-year-old while driving a stolen car in Baltimore.
Residents expressed concerns over rising juvenile crime and called for stricter consequences. One local suggested parents should take responsibility for ensuring their children cannot access vehicle keys.
Szeliga highlighted that legislators are reducing accountability for juvenile offenders, making it easier for them to commit such crimes without fear of repercussions.
