Fatal I-55 Crash in Copiah County Leaves One Dead, Two Injured
COPIAH COUNTY, Miss. — One person is dead and two others injured following a two-vehicle crash on Interstate 55 on the afternoon of July 29.
According to the Mississippi Highway Patrol, the incident occurred around 1:39 p.m. near mile marker 70. A 2018 Kenworth dump truck traveling south crossed the median into northbound lanes, colliding head-on with a 2024 Chevrolet Equinox.
The dump truck's driver, 26-year-old Lataria Wilson of Crystal Springs, was taken to Copiah Medical Center by private vehicle with unknown injuries. The driver of the Equinox, 81-year-old Josephine Cowart of Tickfaw, Louisiana, was transported by ambulance to the University of Mississippi Medical Center; her injuries are also unknown.
Her passenger, 82-year-old Sidney Cowart Jr., also from Tickfaw, sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Authorities said the Mississippi Highway Patrol is continuing its investigation into the crash.
