COVINGTON COUNTY, MS — A first responder was struck and killed while assisting at the scene of a crash on U.S. 49 on Wednesday, May 17, at 3:15 p.m.
According to the Mississippi Highway Patrol, 39-year-old Philip Allan of Magee was crossing the northbound lanes of U.S. 49 when a Chevrolet Equinox, driven by 81-year-old John Barnes of Prentiss, hit him. The details regarding potential charges against Barnes are currently unclear.
Traffic in the northbound lanes of U.S. 49, located south of Seminary, was significantly delayed for several hours as emergency personnel worked to secure the scene.
The incident remains under investigation by MHP.
