Helicopter Crash in Montana Claims Lives of Illinois Gubernatorial Candidate’s Family

A helicopter crash near Ekalaka, Montana, on Wednesday evening resulted in the deaths of Illinois Republican gubernatorial candidate Darren Bailey’s son, daughter-in-law, and their two children.

According to a statement from the Bailey campaign, Zachary Bailey, his wife Kelsey, and their children, Vada Rose, 12, and Samuel, 7, were killed in the accident. The family’s other grandson, Finn, 10, was not on board and is safe.

Darren and Cindy Bailey were informed of the tragedy and began a 19-hour drive to Montana. The crash occurred while Zachary was attending a helicopter convention and piloting a four-seat aircraft; there was no available seat for Finn, as reported by NBC 5 political reporter Mary Ann Ahern.

In the statement, the Bailey family expressed their heartbreak over this “unimaginable loss,” noting their reliance on faith and family for comfort during this difficult time. The couple has requested privacy as they mourn.

Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker has also extended condolences on X, stating, “MK and I are devastated to learn of the tragic passing” of the Bailey family members.

Darren Bailey, a former state senator, is currently running for governor in the 2026 election after losing to Pritzker in 2022.
