POLK COUNTY, Iowa — One person was found dead after a vehicle crashed into a retention pond Sunday afternoon in eastern Polk County, according to the Polk County Sheriff's Office.
Authorities said the communications center received a 911 call at 2:17 p.m. from a witness who reported a vehicle traveling south on Hubbell Avenue in the 8200 block veering off the roadway into a ditch. The vehicle reportedly went through a row of bushes and disappeared from view.
After returning to the scene, the witness discovered the vehicle submerged in the retention pond and called 911. Deputies and Bondurant Fire Department crews responded; firefighters entered the water but were initially unsure if anyone was inside.
A search of the surrounding neighborhood yielded no additional individuals connected to the crash. The Metro STAR Dive Team was summoned to assist in the recovery. After pulling the vehicle from the pond, crews confirmed one person was deceased inside.
The sheriff's office has not released the identity of the victim or details regarding the cause of the crash. The investigation remains ongoing, with further information expected to be released as it becomes available.
