Police Chase Ends in Fatal Crash in Jackson
HINDS COUNTY, Miss. — A police pursuit stemming from a shoplifting incident in Terry resulted in a collision that left two dead on Friday afternoon in Jackson.
According to Byram Police Chief David Errington, Terry Police responded to reports of theft at a Dollar General where a suspect allegedly stole packs of cigarettes and was suspected of being armed. Hinds County deputies alerted nearby agencies, including Byram Police.
A Byram police supervisor located the suspect's vehicle, a brown or gold Ford Expedition, traveling northbound on Interstate 55. The driver initially stopped but fled when an officer requested identification and ordered him to exit the vehicle. The chase continued into Jackson, culminating in a crash at the intersection of Raymond Road and Robinson Road, involving a black 2014 Nissan.
Three individuals occupied the Nissan; two were pronounced dead, and a third sustained non-life-threatening injuries. The suspect was taken to the University of Mississippi Medical Center and remains in custody.
Errington remarked on the tragic outcome, noting that had the suspect complied, he likely would have received a summons and been released shortly thereafter. The Mississippi Highway Patrol is conducting the investigation with assistance from the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation.
As of now, the suspect's identity is not disclosed. Authorities will release the victims' names once next of kin are notified. The investigation is ongoing.
