First Responder Struck and Killed on U.S. 49 in Covington County
COVINGTON COUNTY, MS—A first responder was fatally struck by a vehicle while assisting at a crash scene on U.S. 49 Wednesday afternoon.
The incident occurred around 3:15 p.m. as 39-year-old Philip Allan of Magee was crossing the northbound lanes of U.S. 49. He was hit by a Chevy Equinox driven by 81-year-old John Barnes of Prentiss, according to the Mississippi Highway Patrol (MHP).
Authorities have not confirmed whether Barnes will face charges in connection with Allan’s death.
Traffic on the northbound lanes of U.S. 49, south of Seminary, was backed up for several hours while first responders and law enforcement managed the scene.
The investigation is ongoing, MHP reports.
