Chicago Standoff: Federal Agents Deploy Tear Gas During Immigration Operation
CHICAGO — U.S. Border Patrol agents pursued a vehicle in Chicago's far southeast side on Tuesday, resulting in a crash and the use of tear gas as tensions escalated.
The incident began when a white SUV collided with a red SUV, sending it crashing into another vehicle. Footage from witnesses showed two individuals exiting the red SUV and fleeing as agents from the white SUV gave chase.
According to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), the driver of the red SUV, reportedly in the country illegally, made contact with a Border Patrol vehicle before attempting to escape. Agents employed a precision immobilization technique to stop the vehicle.
After the crash, the situation heightened as witnesses reported an influx of federal agents. “The neighborhood started coming too because there were too many agents there,” said an anonymous witness.
As the crowd grew hostile, federal agents used tear gas for crowd control. Thirteen police officers were exposed to the gas during the operation. Witnesses noted that many community members confronted agents, expressing anger over the aggressive tactics employed during the chase.
Illinois State Senator Robert Peters and Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson dispatched staff to monitor the scene. Beatrice Ponce de Leon, deputy mayor for immigrant rights, criticized the chaos, stating it put residents at risk.
The Chicago Police Department documented the incident but stated they were not involved in federal operations. Ongoing tensions around immigration enforcement continue to affect community sentiment in the city.
This incident follows a recent pattern of escalated operations in the area, raising concerns about safety and community impact.
