RAMONA, S.D. — A 70-year-old man from Astoria was killed Wednesday evening after being struck by a pickup truck while working on a lawnmower.
According to the South Dakota Highway Patrol, Alan Lavern Anderson was repairing a riding lawnmower on 223rd Street, approximately 2 miles northeast of Ramona, around 7:20 p.m. on September 9. The lawnmower had become detached from a carrier mounted on a tailgate.
A westbound pickup truck, driven by a teenager from Nunda, collided with Anderson and the lawnmower at the intersection of 223rd Street and 451st Avenue. Anderson sustained fatal injuries from the impact.
Authorities reported that the driver, a minor who was wearing a seat belt, was not injured in the incident. The driver's name has not been released. Anderson's identity was confirmed by the Department of Public Safety on September 13, following notification of family members.
