5-Year-Old Dies in Multi-Vehicle Crash on I-64

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — A 5-year-old girl died following a four- crash on I-64 eastbound on June 20, according to Virginia State Police.

The incident occurred between mile markers 249 and 250, near Fort Eustis Blvd., and involved serious injuries. Police were notified of the child's death on Wednesday afternoon by the Children's Hospital of the King's Daughters in Norfolk.

The crash prompted the closure of both eastbound and westbound lanes. Authorities stated that was a significant factor. Preliminary investigations revealed that Willie I. Greene, 45, was driving his Dodge Durango at high speed when he rear-ended a 2022 Hyundai Sonata. The impact caused the Hyundai to lose control, veering off the road into the westbound shoulder.

Greene then crossed into the westbound lanes, sideswiping a 2021 Toyota Tacoma before colliding head-on with a Nissan Altima. The Nissan's driver, Tonya Colis, 39, was in the vehicle with her daughter, who was improperly restrained and was from her car seat during the collision.

All parties involved, except for David L. Miyamura, the driver of the Tacoma, were transported to hospitals for treatment.

All lanes of I-64 reopened by 1:21 a.m. on June 21. The investigation is ongoing, with charges pending against Greene.
