DAYTONA BEACH SHORES, Fla. (CBS12) — A deadly crash involving a suspected drunk driver occurred at a toll booth on June 1, leading to an ongoing investigation.

According to the Volusia Sheriff's Office, 911 calls reported erratic driving just before the accident. Witnesses described a pickup truck nearly colliding with several vehicles on Peninsula Drive.

Sheriff Mike Chitwood confirmed that the driver, 35-year-old Deanna Harrell, had been drinking at a local bar earlier that day. Calls to dispatch warned of the truck's dangerous maneuvers, just moments before the incident took place.

Investigators state that 63-year-old toll booth worker Tammy Jo “Tiny Joe” Baker was entering her booth when the crash occurred at approximately 12:38 p.m. “At 12:38, she kills our victim,” Chitwood said, noting that EMTs arrived on scene by 12:39 p.m.

Body camera footage shows first responders rushing to Baker's aid, as Harrell continued south on the beach, ultimately getting her vehicle stuck in the sand. Authorities reported signs of intoxication; Harrell was subsequently taken into custody and placed under the Baker Act after threatening self-harm.

On June 7, the Sheriff's Office announced Harrell's arrest on charges of vehicular homicide and DUI manslaughter.

Family members have expressed deep sorrow over Baker's death, describing her as a devoted mother, grandmother, and vibrant member of the community. Daytona Beach Shores Mayor Nancy Miller urged drivers to exercise caution in the area.

The investigation is ongoing, and authorities are committed to ensuring accountability for Baker's tragic death.
