Aina Haina Moped Crash Claims Life
Aina Haina, HI — A 26-year-old moped rider died from injuries sustained in a crash on Kalanianaole Highway on Saturday, authorities said.
The incident occurred around 12:06 p.m. when the rider, traveling east, lost control, striking a curb on the right shoulder, according to the Honolulu Police Department.
Witnesses reported the rider had been weaving in and out of traffic prior to the accident. Emergency Medical Services transported him in critical condition to a hospital.
The Honolulu Medical Examiner's Office confirmed his death to police on Wednesday. Authorities noted the rider was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash. While speed appears to be a contributing factor, it remains unclear if drugs or alcohol played a role, as per HPD.
This incident marks Oahu's 34th traffic fatality of 2026, compared to 69 fatalities at this time last year. The investigation is ongoing.
