GREENACRES, Fla. (CBS12) — A Learjet crash on South Military Trail claimed the lives of all nine individuals on board Sunday afternoon.
The crash occurred around 12:50 p.m. between Cresthaven Boulevard and 10th Avenue North. Authorities confirmed that flames engulfed the aircraft, producing thick smoke visible in the area. Witnesses reported hearing a loud explosion that echoed for miles.
Among the deceased was 20-year-old Nathalia Filgueiras, identified by her family. Filgueiras was co-piloting the Learjet 60, en route from Austin, Texas, to the Bahamas. She had earned her private pilot's license earlier in 2023, shortly after obtaining her driver's license at age 17.
No injuries were reported on the ground; however, approximately 600 residents of a nearby mobile home park were evacuated as a precaution and relocated to shelters. Emergency responders and county officials remain on the scene, managing the recovery efforts.
An investigation into the cause of the crash is underway.
