DOWNERS GROVE, IL — A high-speed crash on March 27 resulted in the deaths of a married couple from Illinois, authorities reported.
According to the DuPage County State's Attorney's Office, 17-year-old Francesco Rendina has been charged with two counts of reckless homicide. The victims have been identified as 72-year-old Ried Jacobsen and 67-year-old Katherine Jacobsen.
Authorities stated that Rendina was driving a 2022 BMW SUV at excessive speeds and changed lanes recklessly, leading to the fatal collision. Investigators concluded he was traveling at approximately 104 miles per hour shortly before the crash and 89 miles per hour at the time of impact in a 45-mile-per-hour zone. The incident occurred as Ried Jacobsen was executing a turn.
Ried Jacobsen was pronounced dead at the scene, while Katherine Jacobsen succumbed to her injuries at a local hospital.
“This tragedy has had a profound impact on everyone involved and serves as a painful reminder of the consequences of reckless driving,” said Downers Grove Police Chief Michael DeVries.
The court ordered Rendina to be released pre-trial under strict conditions, including a prohibition on driving and substance use unless prescribed. He is scheduled to return to court on June 15.
