ALDSWORTH, England — The Court of Appeal increased a 21-year-old driver's sentence after a Dec. 2, 2022 crash that killed two people.
According to the Attorney General's Office, Liberty Mitchell, 21, of Chipping Norton, saw her term raised from 6 years, 8 months to 9 years, 3 months after referral to the Court of Appeal.
Authorities said Mitchell was driving toward Aldsworth on Dec. 2, 2022, when she attempted to overtake 3 vehicles on the wrong side of the road at nearly 100 mph in a 60 mph zone. She collided with a taxi, triggering a multi-vehicle crash.
Taxi driver Octavian Codreanu died at the scene, and passenger Moyra Whelan later died at a hospital. Six other people were injured, including 3 with serious injuries, authorities said.
Investigators said videos on Mitchell's social media showed her recording herself while driving dangerously, including traveling at about 100 mph and crossing into oncoming traffic. Authorities said she was driving between cleaning jobs and did not have business-use insurance.
Mitchell pleaded guilty to 2 counts of causing death by dangerous driving, 2 counts of causing death while uninsured, and 3 counts of causing serious injury by dangerous driving. She was also disqualified from driving for 8 years, 4 months and must pass an extended test before her license can be restored, authorities said.
