Aldsworth, England (WKRC) — A 21-year-old woman has had her prison sentence extended by over two years after a high-speed crash that killed two people in December 2022.
Liberty Mitchell, of Chipping Norton, saw her sentence increased from 6 years and 8 months to 9 years and 3 months following a referral by the U.K. Attorney General to the Court of Appeal, according to the Attorney General's Office.
On December 2, 2022, Mitchell was driving toward Aldsworth at nearly 100 mph in a 60 mph zone when she attempted to overtake three vehicles on the wrong side of the road. She collided with a taxi, resulting in a multi-vehicle incident.
Taxi driver Octavian Codreanu died at the scene, while passenger Moyra Whelan, a history teacher, later succumbed to her injuries in a hospital. Six additional individuals sustained injuries, with three suffering serious injuries.
Investigators discovered videos on Mitchell's social media accounts where she was seen engaging in reckless driving behaviors, with one video allegedly showing speeds of 100 mph and another displaying her crossing into oncoming traffic. Authorities reported that she was driving between cleaning jobs and lacked insurance coverage for business use.
Mitchell pleaded guilty to two counts of causing death by dangerous driving, two counts of driving uninsured, and three counts of causing serious injury. In addition to her prison sentence, she received an 8-year and 4-month driving disqualification and must complete an extended driving test before her license can be restored.
Attorney General Ellie Reeves stated that Mitchell's “reckless actions behind the wheel claimed the lives of two people and left many others with life-changing injuries.”
