ALDSWORTH, England (WKRC) — A 21-year-old woman was sentenced to over nine years in prison following a high-speed crash that killed two people on December 2, 2022.
Liberty Mitchell of Chipping Norton had her sentence increased from six years and eight months to nine years and three months after the U.K. Attorney General's Office deemed the original penalty too lenient. According to authorities, Mitchell was driving nearly 100 mph in a 60 mph zone when she attempted to overtake three vehicles, colliding with a taxi and causing a multi-vehicle crash.
Taxi driver Octavian Codreanu died at the scene, while passenger Moyra Whelan, a history teacher, later succumbed to injuries at a hospital. Six others sustained injuries, three of which were serious.
Investigators discovered videos on Mitchell's social media depicting her reckless driving behavior, including one where she traveled at 100 mph and another crossing into oncoming traffic. Authorities stated that Mitchell was driving between cleaning jobs without insurance coverage for business use.
Mitchell pleaded guilty to multiple charges, including two counts of causing death by dangerous driving and serious injury. In addition to her prison sentence, she faces an eight-year driving ban and must pass an extended driving test to regain her license.
Attorney General Ellie Reeves stated that Mitchell's “reckless actions behind the wheel claimed the lives of two people and left many others with life-changing injuries.”
