Woman files lawsuit against Maine police following traffic stop before fatal crash.

Federal Lawsuit Filed Following Deadly Crash in Addison

ADDISON, Maine — A civil rights lawsuit was filed on April 10 by Lisa McGlothlin, girlfriend of crash victim David Worcester, against three law enforcement officers following a fatal accident involving an impaired driver.

Nicholas Libby was previously pulled over by ELLSWORTH POLICE and HANCOCK COUNTY SHERIFF'S OFFICE for erratic driving on April 2024 but was released. Approximately an hour later, he crossed the centerline on Route 1 in Steuben, colliding with Worcester's vehicle, resulting in Worcester's death and that of his dog.

The lawsuit claims officers did not adequately address signs of intoxication displayed by Libby, despite evidence he was driving under the influence. It alleges McGlothlin's civil rights were violated due to what is termed a “state-created danger.”

According to the suit, Officer Zachary Chandler noted signs of impairment during the stop but allowed Libby to continue driving after briefly searching his vehicle. Libby possessed cannabis and Clonazepam, a controlled substance, with evidence of overuse.

Witnesses reported erratic driving before the crash, prompting calls to 911. Libby subsequently tested positive for multiple substances, including cannabis and benzodiazepines. He later pled guilty to manslaughter and received a 15-year prison sentence, with five years to serve.

Authorities have not commented further on the ongoing litigation.
