Fatal Head-On Collision on US-24 Near Silver Lake

A fatal crash occurred on US-24 highway, approximately two miles east of Silver Lake, at around 4:11 p.m. on July 1, according to the Kansas Highway Patrol.
The collision involved a 2023 Kia Soul driven by Dakota J. Bacon, 28, of Topeka, and a 2025 Ram 1500 pickup truck operated by James D. Ulmer, 50, of Leavenworth. Bacon was pronounced dead at the scene, and his passenger, William C. Robertson III, 28, also from Topeka, sustained serious injuries and was transported to Stormont Vail Health.
Authorities reported that Ulmer suffered minor injuries and was taken to the same hospital. Both drivers and the passenger were wearing seat belts at the time of the accident.
The incident occurred when Ulmer was attempting to pass other vehicles on the two-lane highway. Bacon attempted an avoidance maneuver before the vehicles collided head-on.
