NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WZTV) — An 87-year-old driver collided with four pedestrians after running a red light on Lower Broadway at approximately 12:30 p.m. on August 1.
Authorities identified the deceased victim as Timothy Wedlock, 58, of Australia. He sustained fatal injuries from the crash. A 44-year-old man from Jacksonville, Florida, is in critical condition at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. A 21-year-old woman from Knoxville suffered non-life-threatening injuries, while a 58-year-old woman from Parsons, Tennessee, is reported to be in critical but stable condition.
According to investigators, Thomas Cahill, the driver, was operating a 2013 Ford Fusion south on Fourth Avenue when he failed to stop at the intersection of Broadway. Witnesses reported hearing the impact and saw bystanders rushing to assist the victims, with one person attempting CPR.
Cahill and his 90-year-old wife, a passenger, were both hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries. Investigators are exploring whether Cahill experienced a medical emergency before the crash. Police confirmed he showed no signs of impairment.
The incident resumed discussions on pedestrian safety in the area, one of Nashville's busiest entertainment districts. While Broadway is occasionally closed to vehicles during heavy pedestrian traffic, conditions on the afternoon of the crash did not necessitate a closure.
No charges have been filed as the Traffic Division continues its investigation.
