MORONI, Utah (KUTV) — A mother and her newborn baby died following a vehicle collision on Tuesday morning.
The incident occurred around 7:55 a.m. near 1808 E. Dairy Lane, according to Utah Highway Patrol (UHP).
UHP Lieutenant Zach Randall reported that 34-year-old Rebecca Hafen was walking along the shoulder when she was struck. She was transported to a hospital, where she succumbed to her injuries.
Following the crash, emergency medical personnel performed an urgent delivery of her newborn. The baby was admitted to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.
However, an update from a GoFundMe campaign revealed the newborn had died shortly thereafter. The fundraising page stated, “Today, our family received more heartbreaking news. Tyson's sweet baby passed away.”
The family was able to spend time with the newborn to say goodbye before his passing.
No charges are anticipated against the driver unless investigators find evidence of speeding, according to UHP. The Sanpete County Attorney's Office will determine any potential charges.
The GoFundMe page is collecting donations to assist the Hafen family with medical expenses, ongoing recovery needs, and childcare during this difficult time.
