PHOENIX — Immigration officers detained a Mexican national after an April 12 rollover crash in Arizona killed her 9-year-old daughter and injured three children, authorities said.
According to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, the driver was identified as Brenda Liliana Rivera-Estrada, 30, and taken into custody by Enforcement and Removal Operations Phoenix.
Authorities said she was impaired during the crash, which ejected her daughter from a car and injured three other children, including an infant.
Rivera-Estrada was initially booked on allegations of manslaughter and child abuse and held on a $100,000 bond, authorities said.
ICE said the Maricopa County Attorney declined to file criminal charges at that time, leading to her release. The Maricopa County Attorney's Office said it did not decline to prosecute and furthered the case for additional investigation, including DUI lab results and a collision analysis.
ICE said Rivera-Estrada entered the U.S. through Nogales, Arizona, in February 2009 as a nonimmigrant border crosser authorized to remain for up to 30 days and overstayed.
Authorities said Rivera-Estrada remains in ICE custody pending immigration proceedings.
