HAGERSTOWN, Ind. (WISH) — A crash involving a semitractor-trailer and a passenger car resulted in two fatalities Monday night in northwestern Wayne County.
Authorities identified the victims as Branden Shaw, 32, and Andrea Boatwright, both of Cincinnati. The Wayne County Sheriff's Office reported the collision occurred shortly after 8:15 p.m. on State Road 1 near Charles Road, approximately 4 miles west of Economy and 4.5 miles north of Hagerstown.
According to investigators, a white 2021 International semitractor-trailer, driven by James Westfall, 65, of Union City, was traveling northbound on State Road 1. A black 2016 Kia Optima, driven by Tyler Dunn, 29, of Cincinnati, was southbound and attempted to overtake another vehicle when it collided head-on with Westfall's semi.
Westfall's truck veered off the eastern side of the road and came to a stop in a ditch, suffering significant front-end damage. Shaw and Boatwright were passengers in the Kia and died at the scene. It remains unclear if Dunn sustained any injuries.
Westfall reported no injuries. Emergency crews responded to the scene, and State Road 1 was closed for several hours for the investigation. Authorities have not confirmed whether winter weather played any role in the incident.
