CUMBERLAND, R.I. (WJAR) — A crash on Interstate 295 left two people dead Friday afternoon, shutting down northbound traffic for several hours.
The accident occurred around 3:30 p.m. near the Mendon Road overpass. According to Rhode Island State Police, a vehicle traveling south lost control, crossed the median, and collided head-on with a black pickup truck in the northbound lane.
Troopers reported one fatality at the scene, while the second victim was transported to Rhode Island Hospital, where they later died. The identities of the deceased have not been released.
Witnesses described the incident as chaotic, with debris scattering across all three northbound lanes. Emergency crews closed the highway for several hours to manage the wreckage and conduct an investigation.
Rhode Island State Police confirmed that they responded promptly to the scene. No additional injuries were reported. The investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash is ongoing.
