GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — Michigan State Police are investigating a two-vehicle crash that resulted in two fatalities on westbound I-196 near the Lane Avenue exit Friday morning.

Authorities reported that at approximately 2:41 p.m., a 36-year-old man from Grand Rapids was driving a Cherokee eastbound in the westbound lanes when he collided head-on with a vehicle driven by a 39-year-old woman from Jenison. Both drivers were the sole occupants of their respective vehicles.

Emergency responders from the Michigan State Police and local medical services arrived on the scene. Both drivers were declared deceased at the site of the accident. Westbound I-196 was closed during the investigation and vehicle recovery but has since reopened.

The investigation is ongoing, and authorities are working to determine the circumstances leading up to the crash. No further details, including the identities of the victims, have been released pending notification of next of kin.
