MORONI, Utah (KUTV) — A tragic accident on Tuesday morning resulted in the deaths of a mother and her newborn baby after the mother was struck by a vehicle.

The incident occurred at approximately 7:55 a.m. near 1808 E. Dairy Lane, as confirmed by the Utah Highway Patrol (UHP). Rebecca Hafen, who was walking on the shoulder of the road while pregnant, was hit by a vehicle. She was transported to a local hospital, where she succumbed to her injuries later that day.

Following the collision, medical personnel performed an emergency delivery. The newborn was also admitted to the hospital and was placed in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). A GoFundMe page revealed that the baby later died.

In a Wednesday update, the fundraiser stated, “Today, our family received more heartbreaking news. Tyson's sweet baby passed away. The medical team did everything they could to care for him.” Family members were able to spend time with the baby prior to his passing.

Authorities indicated that no charges are expected against the driver unless speed is determined to be a contributing factor. The Sanpete County Attorney's Office will make any final decisions regarding potential charges.

The GoFundMe campaign aims to assist the Hafen family with medical expenses and provide support during this difficult time.
