Three killed in helicopter crash on Kauai, Hawaii.

Helicopter Crash off Kauai Coast Leaves Three Dead, Two Injured

KALALAU BEACH, Kauai — A helicopter crash near Kalalau Beach on Kauai's North Shore claimed three lives and injured two others Thursday afternoon, authorities confirmed.

The helicopter, operated by Airborne Aviation, was carrying one pilot and four passengers when it went down shortly before 2:41 p.m. First responders from the Kauai Fire Department reported multiple victims scattered across the beach and shoreline. Rescuers found campers attempting to assist those injured.

Kauai Police Chief Rudy Tai identified the deceased as Margaret Rimmler, 65, and Patrick Haskell, 59, both from Massachusetts. The identity of the third victim remains pending notification of next of kin. Details regarding the condition of the injured have not been disclosed.

This incident marks the latest in a troubling trend, with at least 16 helicopter crash fatalities in Hawaii over the past seven years. Kauai Mayor Derek Kawakami emphasized the importance of the helicopter tour industry to the local economy, despite safety concerns.

Rescue operations were complicated by the remote location accessible only by hiking or boat. The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) is investigating the crash and will examine the helicopter after it is recovered.

Since the incident, Airborne Aviation has suspended all tours. The company expressed condolences to the victims' families and stated it is cooperating with investigators. The Federal Aviation Administration has recently implemented stricter oversight for tour operators in Hawaii, including enhanced pilot training protocols.

The crash adds to a history of accidents in the industry, highlighting ongoing safety challenges in helicopter operations.
