FORT PIERCE, Fla. — A triple fatal crash occurred on the Florida Turnpike near mile marker 170 last Tuesday, involving a semi-truck and a minivan.
Three individuals aged 30, 37, and 54 died in the collision. Investigators reported that the truck driver, Harjinder Singh, attempted an illegal U-turn when the minivan struck the trailer.
Authorities arrested Singh on Saturday, revealing he crossed the Mexican border into the U.S. illegally in 2018. Singh later obtained a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) in California.
James Lewis, a transportation safety expert, emphasized the dangers of illegal U-turns on highways, stating, “You never make a U-turn, not even on residential streets or especially where it's prohibited on a freeway.”
U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy noted the incident highlights the need for a nationwide audit of non-domiciled CDLs. A non-domiciled CDL permits foreign workers to operate commercial vehicles, but they require legal work authorization. WPTV is investigating the validity of Singh's CDL at the time of the crash.
Singh faces three counts of vehicular homicide and will be deported following the resolution of his criminal case.
