TOWN OF BRADFORD, Wis. (WKOW) — A 17-year-old driver faces homicide charges following a crash that killed a 15-year-old boy and injured three other teenagers on Tuesday.

Carter R. Perteete of Beloit is charged with homicide by negligent use of a vehicle, two counts of causing great bodily harm, and one count of causing injury. The crash occurred at approximately 3:50 p.m. on South Emerald Grove Road near East Larsen Road.

According to the Rock County Sheriff's Office, Perteete was driving a Volkswagen Rabbit north on Emerald Grove when he lost control. The vehicle went into a ditch, rolled multiple times, and came to rest in a cornfield. A passenger confirmed Perteete was driving too fast and noted the 15-year-old victim attempted to shield her during the incident.

The victim was from the vehicle and at the scene. Three other passengers sustained non-life-threatening injuries, including a broken pelvis and spine fractures. THC vape pens were found inside the vehicle, and some passengers admitted to using them prior to the crash. Perteete acknowledged using THC earlier in the day but denied consumption while driving and estimated his speed was between 60 mph and 65 mph, exceeding the posted limit of 45 mph.

Perteete was released on a $50,000 signature bond during his initial appearance on Thursday. He must refrain from driving, maintain sobriety, and avoid contact with the victim's family and other passengers. The investigation remains ongoing, with blood test results pending.
