MARTIN COUNTY, Fla. — An 18-year-old South Fork High School student died in a crash on the way to graduation practice on Monday morning.
Chris Brooks was killed in a single-vehicle accident on Pratt Whitney Road, according to authorities. Emergency responders arrived at approximately 9:30 a.m. and pronounced him dead at the scene. No other vehicles were involved in the incident.
Witnesses reported that Brooks was on his way to join fellow classmates for graduation practice for the class of 2026. His tragic loss cast a shadow over the graduation festivities as students gathered to celebrate.
Friends remembered Brooks as an active member of his church and a participant on the school's bowling team. He was planning to attend college in Jacksonville and had secured a full-time job.
One of his close friends, Rylan Morris, expressed the profound impact of losing Brooks, stating, “He was a friend to everyone.” Morris reflected on a project they worked on together, highlighting the deep bond they shared.
The loss resonated throughout the student body, with friends offering comfort to each other during this challenging time. Savannah, another friend, lamented the missed milestone, saying, “It's just heartbreaking… knowing that he was supposed to be part of this.”
In memory of Brooks, the class of 2026 made a donation to the Elevate Hope charity in the superintendent's name. The organization announced it would direct that donation to support Brooks' family.
The school will leave an empty seat at graduation in honor of Brooks, a poignant reminder of the community's loss this year.
