GLEN ULLIN, N.D. — A 7-year-old child was killed in a collision Thursday morning in Mercer County.
According to the North Dakota Highway Patrol, the crash took place at 7:12 a.m. at the intersection of Highway 49 and 28th Street Southwest, approximately 15 miles north of Glen Ullin.
A 35-year-old man from Beulah was driving a 2022 Chevrolet Colorado south on Highway 49. Simultaneously, a 40-year-old woman from New Salem was driving a 2014 Ford Escape west on 28th Street Southwest, approaching a stop sign. The Ford failed to stop, entering the intersection, where it was struck by the Chevrolet on the front passenger side.
Both vehicles left the roadway, and the 7-year-old passenger in the Ford was pronounced dead at the scene. Three other children in the Ford, ages 12, 9, and 4, sustained serious injuries, along with both drivers. All were transported to Sanford Medical Center in Bismarck.
Authorities said the investigation is ongoing, particularly regarding whether the 7-year-old was wearing a seat belt at the time of the collision. All other occupants of the vehicles were confirmed to be wearing seat belts. Potential charges against the driver of the Ford are under review.
Weather conditions at the time of the crash were foggy, according to officials. Glen Ullin is located roughly 54 miles west of Bismarck.
