Pilot car driver killed in crash near Hettinger.

ADAMS COUNTY, N.D. — A 24-year-old Michigan man died in a crash on Highway 12 at approximately 10 a.m. MST on Tuesday, March 31.

According to the North Dakota Highway Patrol, the man was operating a Tundra as a pilot for an oversize load when he rear-ended a 2007 International truck and trailer. The International, driven by a 72-year-old Hettinger man, was traveling westbound at 45 mph, accompanied by a 20-year-old passenger.

Authorities reported that the Tundra was traveling between 65-70 mph at the time of impact. Both occupants of the International truck were unharmed. The Michigan man was at the scene and was not wearing a seatbelt during the collision.

The patrol has not provided information regarding potential injuries to the driver of the oversize load. An investigation into the crash is ongoing.
