Riviera Beach City Council Addresses City Manager's Absence
RIVIERA BEACH, FL — City Council members discussed the future of City Manager William E. Wilkins during a contentious meeting on Wednesday, focusing on the impact of his extended absence since an August car crash.
Wilkins has been working remotely as a result of injuries sustained in the crash, according to city officials. Some council members expressed concern over their lack of communication regarding his condition and the management of city operations during his absence.
The discussion comes amid ongoing leadership challenges following the dismissal of former City Manager Jonathan Evans in April 2026, as residents and officials call for stability within the city.
Council Voices Concerns Over Communication
Several council members criticized the lack of communication related to Wilkins' status. Councilwoman Shirley D. Lanier stated she had not been informed of Wilkins' accident or his remote work situation since August. “I didn't know he was in a car wreck,” Lanier remarked.
Lanier and Councilwoman Kashamba Miller-Anderson questioned the sustainability of the current leadership structure, emphasizing the need for clarity about the city manager's plans. Miller-Anderson insisted on a decision regarding Wilkins' employment, stating, “Either take leave, resign, or come back.”
City Operations Continue, Officials Say
Not all council members shared the critical view. Dr. Glen Spiritis, chair pro tem, asserted that communication with Wilkins has been maintained and that he continues to effectively manage city operations remotely. Supporters noted that daily functions are proceeding as normal, despite Wilkins' absence.
Residents Call for Clarity and Progress
Residents attending the meeting expressed their concerns regarding the uncertainty surrounding Wilkins' wellness and leadership. Doretta Paulk remarked she was unaware of the situation, while Margaret Shepherd urged council members to focus on advancing city business.
Next Steps Remain Unclear
City officials plan to review the status of Wilkins, but it is uncertain if formal action will be proposed. The council's discussions are expected to remain in the public eye as they work towards clarity on the city's leadership structure.
WPTV reached out to Wilkins for comment but had not received a response as of Wednesday evening.
