Oct. 4, 2026, 6:51 a.m. ET — AAA is warning motorists to remain vigilant in the region as peak deer season approaches, increasing the risk of roadway collisions.

Deer activity heightens during the fall mating season, particularly from October through December. Authorities advise drivers to be extra cautious at dawn and dusk when deer are most active.

-strike incidents can lead to severe injuries and expensive vehicle damage. According to AAA, the average insurance claim for -strike crashes in 2025 was nearly $7,500, marking a 20% rise from five years prior. Nationally, nearly 2,000 people died in animal-related crashes from 2015 to 2024, averaging 196 fatalities annually.

In Pennsylvania, three fatalities were reported in deer-related accidents during that same period. To minimize the risk of deer collisions, AAA offers several safety tips:

  • Scan the roadway: Continuously watch both sides of the road to spot animals quickly.
  • Exercise caution at dawn and dusk: Deer are most active between 5–8 a.m. and 5–8 p.m.
  • Know deer habitats: Stay alert near wooded areas and locations marked with deer-crossing signs.
  • Use high beams when safe: This helps illuminate the road and reflect off deer eyes.
  • Expect multiple deer: If one deer crosses, more may follow.
  • Use your horn if needed: A long blast can encourage deer to move.
  • Do not swerve for deer: Maintaining lane position can prevent more serious accidents.
  • Wear seat belts: Buckling up reduces injury risk in all collisions.

With falling temperatures, AAA emphasizes the importance of slowing down and staying alert for animals on the road.
