A 1-year-old died Thursday after a single-vehicle crash early Monday on Interstate 64 in Hampton, authorities said.
According to the Virginia State Police, the crash occurred around 2 a.m. when a car left the roadway, struck a guardrail and hit a barrier.
Police said the child was not properly restrained, suffered serious injuries at the scene, and later died.
The 14-year-old driver, who was not wearing a seat belt, suffered serious injuries and was taken to a local hospital, authorities said.
Authorities said the teen was under the influence and did not have a driver's license.
She is charged with driving under the influence, driving without a license and a child restraint violation; additional charges are pending, according to The Virginian-Pilot.
No other vehicles were involved. The investigation is ongoing.
