Teen Pedestrian Dies After Collision with IndyGo Bus in Indianapolis
INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — A 14-year-old pedestrian was killed Friday night in a collision with an IndyGo bus on North Post Road, according to police.
The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD) responded to the crash at approximately 8:45 p.m. in the 3800 block of North Post Road, just north of East 38th Street. The area features gas stations and restaurants, along with an IndyGo bus stop positioned between the northbound and southbound lanes.
IMPD officials stated that the girl crossed the road midblock, which is discouraged for pedestrians. Officers discovered her in the road, and she was transported to a local hospital in critical condition, where she later succumbed to her injuries. The victim was identified as Ikeria Jones.
IMPD Captain Don Weilhammer confirmed that preliminary investigations indicated the victim collided with the side of the bus, which the driver reportedly did not see but heard. Crews were securing video footage from the IndyGo bus and sought further witnesses, especially a person who was with Jones prior to the incident.
Authorities are encouraging anyone with information to contact Officer Eric Snow at 317-327-6549 or Crime Stoppers of Central Indiana. Toxicological tests will be conducted on the bus driver as part of the investigation, as is standard in fatal crashes.
A spokesperson for IndyGo deferred comments to the IMPD. The organization is overseen by a bipartisan board appointed by the mayor and City-County Council.
Further updates will follow as the investigation continues.
