One person is dead following a crash on Interstate 40 in Pender County Thursday afternoon.
According to authorities, the incident occurred around 3 p.m. near mile marker 393 between Wallace and Burgaw.
North Carolina State Highway Patrol reported a Honda traveling westbound lost control, struck the median cable barrier, crossed into eastbound lanes, and collided head-on with a tanker truck.
The driver of the Honda was pronounced dead at the scene.
The tanker truck driver was transported to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
The crash prompted lane closures on I-40 for several hours as crews worked to clear the wreckage and investigate the cause. An investigation is ongoing.
